Taiko Classes
WALAKADO runs regular practice sessions of traditional Japanese drumming styles, including
Miyake Taiko, Hachijo Taiko, Wachi Taiko, as well as ensemble pieces.
We regularly invite instructors to Australia to deepen our taiko technique and to share the cultural origins of each style.
We also often travel to Japan to learn these taiko styles.

Our classes focus on developing a deep appreciation for sound quality while fostering both individual and group rhythmic expression. We take pride in maintaining our drums in pristine condition, allowing students to experience the true resonance and power of taiko. Our classes are designed for everyone, from beginners to aspiring performers, creating an inclusive and dynamic environment for learning and personal growth.
Taiko Class for all 18:30-19:30 / Fridays
Step into the groove and discover the basics of taiko drumming in our beginner class. This is the perfect starting point for those new to taiko or musical activities. You'll learn foundational rhythms, techniques, and group coordination in a supportive and welcoming atmosphere. Taiko is not only an engaging cultural experience but also a fantastic way to stay active, reduce stress, and build confidence through music and movement. You’ll also gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of Japanese culture through the art of taiko.
Taiko Class for performers 19:30-20:45 / Fridays
For those ready to take their taiko journey further, our performer class invites you to fully immerse yourself in the rhythm and groove of taiko. This program is tailored for dedicated students who wish to deepen their understanding of taiko, refine their technical abilities, and experience the thrill of performing. Students will have opportunities to showcase their talents at local events and festivals. Performing with WALAKADO builds confidence, teamwork, and a strong connection to the spirit of taiko, while celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Japan.

Hachijo and Kanju Taiko
Shome Shome Club
The Shome Shome Club meets roughly once a month to explore the unique styles of Hachijo and Kanju Daiko. Originating from the Izu Islands of Hachijo and Aogashima, these forms of taiko drumming are known for their emphasis on individual expression, layered over traditional island rhythms.
We often travel to Hachijo Island to learn directly from local performers, gaining deeper insight into this distinctive and evolving style. We also take part in events such as the 24-Hour Challenge Hachijo Daiko, where we can fully immerse ourselves in the tradition and community.
Shome Shome Club is all about enjoying taiko and celebrating creativity—no experience is necessary to join. Everyone is welcome!
Wachi Taiko
Dokkoisa Wachi Kai
Dokkoisa Wachi Kai practises the vibrant style of Wachi Taiko—a dynamic festival drumming tradition from the Wachi region in northern Kyoto Prefecture. Known for its energetic rhythms and funky movements, Wachi Taiko has been lovingly preserved by the local community in Kyōtanba Town (formerly Wachi Town) as the cherished sound of their hometown.
Ayako has been visiting Wachi since her original Walakado days—long before moving to Australia—to study Wachi Taiko directly from the Wachi Taiko Preservation Society. She brought this joyful and expressive tradition to Melbourne, where we continue to practise and celebrate it as part of our taiko repertoire.
Beginners are always welcome to join Dokkoisa Wachi Kai and experience the joy and energy of Wachi Taiko for themselves!
