WALAKADO
Japanese Taiko Drumming

Walakado was established in 2024. The name “Walakado” comes from the Japanese proverb “Laughter at the gate brings happiness.” Originally the name of founder and taiko performer Ayako’s all-female taiko group in Japan, Walakado now carries forward that joyful spirit in Melbourne, Australia.

Walakado strives to create a space where both drummers and audiences are uplifted by the sound of taiko—a place where hearts are filled with joy and smiles come naturally.

Based in Melbourne, Walakado shares the art of taiko drumming with the community. From traditional to contemporary styles and for all ages, experience the power and beauty of taiko with Walakado. In addition to regular taiko classes, workshops, performances and school shows, Walakado also organises events and manages Australia Miyake Kai—officially recognised by the Miyake-jima Geino Doshikai in Japan.

Australia Miyake Kai is dedicated to promoting and preserving the dynamic style of Miyake Taiko across Australia and New Zealand, offering a space for people to connect through this powerful tradition.

Ayako Tsunazawa

Founder, Taiko Performer, and Workshop Facilitator

Ayako Tsunazawa honed her fundamental taiko skills at Mirai Taiko Dojo in Tokyo before co-founding the all-female taiko group WALAKADO with fellow taiko enthusiasts. Through collaborations and continuous learning, they developed a unique sound and style that reflected their commitment to female empowerment and community engagement. In recognition of their contributions, WALAKADO was awarded the Avon Products Women Empowerment Grant in 2005, highlighting their innovative approach to expanding the possibilities of taiko.

Ayako began her journey with Miyake Daiko in 1997 under the mentorship of the Miyakejima Geino Doshikai, a relationship she continues to this day. In 2011, she established Australia Miyake Kai, dedicating herself to promoting Miyake Daiko across Australia and New Zealand.

Since relocating to Australia in 2007, Ayako has remained deeply engaged in the taiko world. Her contributions include:

Forming the Japanese traditional instrument and taiko duo "A.YA"

Conducting school performances and workshops

Inviting taiko artists from Japan to lead workshops and concerts

Organizing and leading "Taiko Trip" tours to Japan

Serving as President of Taikokoro Inc.

Successfully managing the Australia and New Zealand Taiko Conference in 2022

Launching taiko classes for children and adults in 2024

Additionally, in 2022, she obtained her Exerdonne facilitator certification (Certification No.11), integrating taiko-based exercises for dementia prevention into her workshops.

Drawing from her diverse expertise, including a Diploma in Early Childhood Education from Australia, Ayako passionately offers a wide range of taiko workshops tailored to various age groups, backgrounds, and occasions. She continues to share her love for taiko, fostering connection, collaboration, and cultural appreciation through rhythm and movement.
