Miyake Taiko Australia Miyake Kai

Miyake Taiko consists of a few simple yet catchy rhythm patterns.
With just a couple of lessons, you can start enjoying the experience of playing.
The style is performed on a drum positioned sideways on a low stand, and it’s not only engaging but also a fun, full-body team workout!

Formally known as Miyake-jima Kamitsuki Mikoshi Daiko, this traditional Japanese drumming style has become known worldwide, thanks in large part to international tours by the renowned taiko performing arts ensemble, Kodo.
The name "Miyake" comes from Miyake-jima, an island located approximately 180km south of Tokyo, where this dynamic style originated.

About Australia Miyake Kai

Australia Miyake Kai (AMK) was established in Melbourne in 2011.
Led by Ayako Tsunazawa, one of the longest-standing students of Miyake-jima Geino Doshikai in Japan, our mission is to bring people from diverse backgrounds together through the shared practice of Miyake Taiko.

All levels practise together at our sessions.
We encourage one another, working toward personal goals such as improving stamina and refining form.
Members of AMK have the opportunity to train with Miyake Taiko classes held in Japan by Miyake-jima Geino Doshikai.

AMK is officially recognised by Miyake-jima Geino Doshikai (official site) and is a proud member of World Miyake Kai, a global network of official Miyake Kai groups.
We maintain strong connections with sister practice groups in Singapore, Canada, and the United States.
AMK has become a hub for Miyake Taiko practitioners, regularly welcoming guests from across Australian states and from overseas.
These gatherings foster a vibrant community where knowledge and passion for Miyake Taiko are actively shared.

Annual Miyake Taiko Intensive Workshop

Australia Miyake Kai regularly invites instructors from Miyake-jima Geino Doshikai in Japan to lead intensive workshops in Melbourne, helping us deepen our practice and understanding of Miyake Taiko.

These workshops provide a valuable opportunity to review techniques in detail and refine your form under expert guidance.
Participants join us from across Australia and New Zealand, as well as from Japan and other countries, to study together in both evening and live-in formats.
